KIWANIS KARES

GUEST SPEAKER:

Our very own Charlie Johnson was our speaker today.  At the start, Charlie, who will be 96 years old on September 30, 2014 invited us all to leave.  To our great astonishment, Charlie gave us a historical perspective on his work life.  Starting out with college (which Charlie acknowledged was slightly cheaper when he went than now) Charlie acknowledged signing up for and joining the Navy when Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Germans, (err Japanese).  Charlie recalled a big hangover for the big day.  After meeting his Wife, Doris, while at basic training, Charlie went off in search of submarines off the coast of New Orleans.  Following a successful stint as PBM pilot for these purposes Charlie was deployed to the Pacific Theater.  Awaiting shipment to the Far East from California, the Japanese surrendered and Charlie got to go home.

Regaling us with a lengthy and illustrious work history in Buffalo Charlie acknowledged that, at 95 years plus, he is still on the payroll for his latest employer, QBM where he is involved in work associated with carbon fiber applications.  If Doris would just cut back on shopping maybe Charlie could cut back to part time!

It was a distinct pleasure to hear from Charlie.  Hopefully, in ten years he can retire.  Thanks Charlie!
